The living library

Instead of listening to a talk, you borrow a person for fifteen minutes and ask her whatever you want. The three dots on each spine are the qualities she picked. Pull one off the shelf.

In fifteen minutes you could

Three coloured dots

Every expert at YWC picks the three qualities that matter most in her work and wears them as three coloured dots on her badge. There are fifteen to choose from. Tap the three that sound most like you.

Tap a dot to read what it means.

The fifteen STEM attributes come from NUSTEM at Northumbria University.

Who it's for

You, if you're 12 to 19

You don't need to be good at maths, and you don't need to love science.

School classes

Teachers can register a whole class or different groups from the same school.

People working in STEM

Come as a panellist or an exhibitor, or tell your story in the living library.

Questions

Questions for:
Tell my teacher
Do I need to be good at science?

No. Nobody expects you to know things already. You come to find out what is out there.

How do I sign up?

Your school registers your class. If your teacher has not heard about YWC yet, use the Tell my teacher button above to send them an email.

Can I come on my own?

No, unfortunately you can only come with your school. Unless you'd like to moderate some panels for us? If so, let us know by writing to {mail}.

How do I register my class?

Use the Register button above. Questions? Write to {mail}.

What are the times of the event?

The event starts at around 9:30 to 10:00, to give schools that are further away time to arrive. It finishes at around 16:00. We will share the exact agenda with you closer to the date.

Do you provide support for transportation?

Yes, we can organise a school bus for your school. Please bear in mind that priority goes to schools that are far from the Belval campus.

Will we be able to park close to the venue?

There is a university car park right next to the Belval campus. We will share access details closer to the event.

Will lunch and refreshments be provided, or should we bring our own food?

We provide a free lunch for all teachers and students.

How do I register as an exhibitor or panelist?

Use the Register button above. Exhibitors and panelists use the same form. Questions? Write to {mail}.

Can I take part in the living library?

Yes, and you don't need to be on a panel to do it. Write to {mail} and tell us you'd like to share your story as a book in the living library.

What are the three dots?

Every expert taking part picks three of fifteen STEM attributes that matter most in their work and wears them as coloured dots. We will ask you for yours before the event.

What does a booth involve?

The exhibition room at YWC Luxembourg has many booths with hands-on, interactive activities in many fields.

Can students choose their panel?

No. Each class is assigned one panel, and panels are not themed by subject. Apart from the panel and the keynotes, which are fixed, students can do all the other activities at their own pace.

What are the coloured dots on the expert badges?

Every expert wears three dots for the qualities that matter most in their work. Have a look at the fifteen options and see which ones sound like you.

Does it cost anything?

No, it doesn't. Just make sure your school registers your group.

Where exactly is it?

Belval campus, Esch-sur-Alzette, reachable by train to Belval-Université.

What language is it in?

Panels run in several languages: Luxembourgish, German, French or English. The exhibitors speak several languages too.

Who looks after the students during the day?

Students generally come with the teachers who are responsible for them.

One path into STEM

Scroll to follow her.

At twelve, she takes apart an old phone to see what is inside.

  2. Isn't that more for boys? You're not really a maths person. What job would that even be?

Then come the reasons not to.

  3. 14

At a conference in Belval, she meets a woman who does that job. She asks her everything.

  4. 17

Her first real lab. She expected to feel out of place. She doesn't.

  5. 24

She builds parts for satellites. Some of them are up there now.

  6. 31

Now she is the one people borrow from the living library.
